Algerian Industrial
Workers Strike
Story Filed: Sunday, May 21, 2000 5:14 PM EDT
"ALGIERS, Algeria (AP) -- About 100,000 Algerian industrial workers
went on strike Sunday to protest plans that could lead to further privatization
of state industries. Much of Algeria's industry is in state hands, and
workers worry that proposals to privatize some companies could lead
to job cuts. Some 60 companies, including those in the metals, mechanical
and electrical industries, were hit by the nationwide strike. Unions
representing the workers want the government to preserve state industries,
clean up their finances, and allow employees to participate in decisions
concerning the future of state-run companies. Thousands of workers have
lost their jobs in recent years as the government tries to orient the
Algerian economy to more market-oriented principles."
