We are
Manchester people who are strongly opposed to the current 'redevelopment'
of Manchester.
The council's
admitted policy is to sell off council assets (like the Free
Trade Hall) to cover losses from the Commonwealth Games. In
Manchester 'redevelopment' seems to mean creating more things
for rich people - more glossy office buildings, flashy bars,
and yuppie flats - at the expense of things for ordinary residents
like us. We are sick of feeling excluded from our own city centre.
A while
ago some of us occupied the Hacienda, both to celebrate Manchester's
buzzing creative music scene and to give the building the send
off it deserved. Also we wanted to make the point that it is
a travesty that a building so much a part of many peoples lives
and hearts in Manchester should be converted into homes for
the super rich.
Similarly,
it's not fair that our Free Trade Hall, which was intended as
a public space for music, cultural, religious and political
events should be sold off and not replaced.
It's not
just our history we fight for, but our right to have an equal
say in decisions which affect our lives.
