The Free
Trade Hall and the site it was built on are both of great historical
significance, both for Manchester and the world.
The Free
Trade Hall was built on the site of the 1819 Peterloo
Massacre. The forerunners of Greater Manchester Police launched
a vicious attack on protesters who were demanding the vote.
The attack left 11 men and women dead and hundreds injured.
The Free
Trade Hall was a celebration of the achivements of the Anti-Corn
Law League who were early exponents of the Free
Trade economic doctrine. This is now THE economic doctrine
of international trade - enforced by global bodies like the
World Trade Organisation.
This is
just a taster of the historical significance of this site and
this building in Manchester and world history.
